The Upgrade Path
By Eric Muench, President

I want to talk a little about the future of your software investment and what Genesistems and the TOM Software people have been doing to advance our products.

The two topics on everyone’s mind are “Windows” and application improvements. Windows is written in a language called “C” and the Basic2 language that runs your applications is written in “C”. The only difference is how the screen looks, not the programming language. We are just finishing up the graphical or “Windows” version of the product. We have been testing it for 6 months and it is getting very close to a final product. We also have written application enhancements. They center on easier access to your accounting data, such as the ability to “click” on a balance and see the transactions that are the source of the balance. This change also moves the updating or posting process to the user level. That means a user can just post his or her transactions and not affect everyone else on the system.

Both these changes will be announced shortly. We intend to have a user conference in Rochester during the third week in October to show you how this will all work and the benefits you will gain from upgrading.

This brings me to my last point. To do all this we have had to move from the NIAKWA version of the Basic2 language using the “Goldkey” disks to the Kerridge version of the language, named KCML. This is more of a mechanical change and does not change your application or screens, just some differences behind the scenes on how certain programming items are done. The reason is that there are no usable “graphical tools” available in the Niakwa version and they have not announced any R&D for new functions. Options such as using the Internet to access your accounting are not possible with Niakwa, while they are standard in KCML. We are the OLDEST Niakwa dealer and do not make this change lightly. We have a number of KCML conversions done and installed already. All our new sales use this language AND Kerridge will offer a trade in on your old Goldkey disk to help with the conversion costs. There will be much more on this in the future. There are changes that will allow you to increase the use of your software and allow you to get many more years out of your initial investment. Upgrade Questions

Happy with Speed?

Speed has been withdrawn from the market after 20 years. It is stable and still supported by Genesistems. We can and do make changes for customers but there are no new tools coming out for Speed.

Speed or 4D?

This is what you see on the screen every time you log in - Speed is usually a white text on a plain black background. 4D is colorful, usually blue outlined boxes.

NPL/KCML?

NPL = Goldkey Security

KCML = Dongle Security

KCML offers Graphical Tools. Any questions, call Genesistems.

ODBC?

The long version is Open Data Base Connectivity. An example would be writing a letter in word-processing and using your customer file to provide the addresses - seamlessly!

Better Printing?

Graphical output - color and black & white is available with the KPRINT utility. Forms with logos, lines, shading and proportional fonts can be designed. No more buying pre-printed forms.
